Chapter 4 "The Disciples Baptize"

1 After these things, Jesus and his disciples came into the Judean countryside, and he remained there with them and was cleansing with immersion, and John was also cleansing with immersion in Aenon near Salim, because there was plenty of water there.

2 And they were still coming and being cleansed with immersion for John had not yet been cast into prison.

3 A debate then started from among John's disciples, about cleansing, with a Judean. And they came to John and said to him, "Rabbi, the one who was with you beyond the Jordan, from your testimony, behold, He cleanses with immersion and all go to Him."

4 John replied and said, "A man cannot receive anything unless it is given to him from heaven. You yourselves heard my testimony, that I said, 'I am not the Christ but I am sent before Him.' The one to hold the bride is the groom but the groom's friend, standing and listening for him, rejoices with joy at the voice of the groom. Therefore, this joy of mine is fulfilled. He must increase and I must decrease."

5 The one who is above all comes from above.

6 The one who belongs to the earth is from earth and speaks from the earth.

7 The one who is above all comes from heaven.

8 He testifies that he has seen and heard this but no one receives his testimony.

9 The one who received his witness confirms that God is truthful.

10 He whom God sent, speaks the words of God. The Spirit gives without measure.

11 The Father loves the Son and has put all things into His hand.

12 The one believing into the Son has eternal life but the one that rebels against the Son will not see life, instead, the wrath of God remains on him.

13 Then, when Jesus knew that the Pharisees heard that Jesus makes and cleanses with immersion more disciples than John— and yet, not Jesus himself, instead his disciples were cleansing with immersion— He left Judea and went back into Galilee.

My Thoughts

We find out later that Jesus had not been the one baptizing so when it says that Jesus went and remained with his disciples, they were the ones baptizing. Not only were they now baptizing but John was also still baptizing but he had moved to a place named for the many springs, near Salim.

In verse 4, John replies with a curious statement about what a person has. I remember this being explained as "The greatest power a person can receive can only be given to them by God."
